The Journal of Anodyne Historical Documents

Kenyon Review, Spring 2024

Vol. 5, No. 1

Fall 2055

The following document was discovered in the papers of ANDREW R. ADAMS, who died peacefully at his home in Portland, Maine, on April 15, 2052, at the age of ninety, of natural causes. His sister found the document on his desk, where it appeared Adams had been working on it at the time of his death.

The JOURNAL is publishing the document exactly as it was found. — Ed.

A PERSONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA

Compiled by

ANDREW R. ADAMS*

ALPHABET — A set of written symbols representing sounds that are combined into words. Because the letters in an Alphabet have a specified sequence (i.e., alphabetical order), words can be organized in a standardized manner without regard to the words’ underlying meaning, which is particularly useful for the collection and presentation of information in reference works. See ENCYCLOPEDIA.

ANGUISH — Pain or distress suffered in times of extreme hardship. See GRIEF.
